Aeronautical Requirements
To obtain a Private Pilot License – Helicopter, the FAA requires the following:
Eligibility Requirements
- Be at least 17 years old
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
- Hold at least a third-class medical certificate
The FAA mandates a minimum of 40 flight hours, which must include:
- 20 hours of dual instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
- 10 hours of solo flight time
- 3 hours of cross-country training
- 3 hours of night flight (including 10 takeoffs & landings)
- 3 hours of flight solely by reference to instruments
- 1 cross-country solo flight over 50 nautical miles
Ground School & Written Exam
In addition to flight training, students must complete ground school covering topics such as:
- Helicopter aerodynamics and systems
- FAA regulations and airspace
- Navigation and flight planning
- Weather theory and meteorology
- Emergency procedures
Before the checkride, students must pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam, a 60-question test on these subjects.

Your Checkride & Certification
Upon completion of training, you’ll take your practical test (checkride) with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). This exam consists of:

- Flight Test – Demonstrating maneuvers, landings, emergency procedures, and navigation skills
