Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: Be at least 18 years old.
  • Medical Certificate: Hold at least a second-class medical certificate.
  • Language Proficiency: Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Pilot Certificate: Hold a Private Pilot Certificate with a rotorcraft-helicopter rating

Flight Experience Requirements

  • Total Flight Time: 150 hours of flight time, including:
    • 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC), with:
      • 35 hours in helicopters
      • 10 hours of cross-country flight in helicopters
    • 20 hours of dual flight instruction, including:
      • 5 hours of night flying (with 10 takeoffs and landings at an airport)
      • 5 hours of simulated instrument flight training
    • 10 hours of solo flight, including:
      • One cross-country flight of 100 nautical miles
      • 5 hours of night flying

Recent Flight Experience

  • 3 hours of flight training in a helicopter with an authorized instructor within 2 calendar months of the practical test.

Ground Training and Testing

  • Ground School: Advanced instruction on helicopter aerodynamics, FAA regulations, and commercial flight operations.
  • Knowledge Test: Pass the FAA Commercial Pilot – Helicopter written exam.
  • Practical Exam: Pass the FAA checkride, which includes an oral exam and flight test.
